Understand

Context

Ampcontrol is an AI-powered charging management software thats helps companies like Revel track and optimize their EV charging operations and vehicle telematics.

My task: Redesign Ampcontrols homepage to serve as a tool to enable operators to track operations and manage issues across their entire organization at a glance.

Why Ground Operators?

They monitor charging equipment, handle on-site emergencies, and manage customer queries. As primary users of our platform, they ensure daily site operations and oversee other stakeholders, including fleet managers, drivers, and executives.

Problem Definition

squiggly.png

Ground Operators need a streamlined way of tracking charging sessions and managing charger and vehicle issues happening throughout ALL of their charging sites within Ampcontrol.

Discovery

As the lead designer on this project, I focused on identifying the most important data points and issues for ground operators to track to help them maintain smooth operations. I conducted 3 user research sessions with existing customers as well as a competitor analysis to begin begin brainstorming design solutions.

These were some of my key takeaways:

01.

Ground operators need to be able to see the general state of a charging site at all times

- Monitor the count of all their assets (Chargers & Vehicles)

- Monitor how their assets are functioning (chargers are connected, vehicles are charging)

- Monitor whether vehicle trips are running on time

02.

Ground operators need to be able to identify and quickly fix whats going "wrong" at their sites

- Identify and fix high level hardware issues asap at charging sites (Disconnected chargers, faulted connectors, etc)

- Avoid exceeding the charging capacity for sites to prevent additional financial penalties from their utility companies.

Samsara

Samsara's map view was highly effective in providing a high-level overview of all the assets counts and individual assets that a ground operator needs to track.

Geotab

Geotab's ability to sort through charging sites based on specific hardware issues was a feature that most of our current clients referenced needing within our system.

Gain Confidence

Define

Once I had some concrete ideas for what our users prioritized and our competitors offerings that we needed to compete against, I came up with a series of design goals for the final product

01.

A map view showcasing:

-All customer assets (networks and vehicles)

-Zooming & Panning capabilities

-Identification tags for networks and vehicles

02.

A list view showcasing:

-The power utilization for each network

-The count of assets per network

-The count of hardware issues per network

03.

Sorting capability

-By issues/alerts relevant to ground operators

Ideate

Once I defined my goals I designed a series of dashboards that experimented with different ways of visually presenting a map and charging data.

Main challenge:

Showcasing complex information in an easy-to-understand format while balancing screen real estate between the map and the data.

Converge

After coming up with a series of concepts, that I tested and validated with our current customers, we had to converge on one direction. The final concept seamlessly brought together 2 important iterations based on feedback:

01.

We honed down the most important pieces of charger and vehicle data, reducing information overload within this view.

02.

Designed more subtle call-to-actions that would alert users of hardware issues without causing distractions, effectively prompting action.
